Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 VM Nokton IV Aspherical Lens Summary
The next-generation Voigtlander 35mm f/1.2 VM Nokton IV Aspherical Lens is a fast, manual focus slightly wide standard prime for full-frame rangefinder cameras with the Leica M (VM) mount. As the fourth generation of this highly regarded lens, it retains the optical design of its predecessor while adding a handful of updates to improve usability. These include a new black filter ring, reduced weight thanks to internal structural refinements, and compatibility with an updated, reversible lens hood LH-14, sold separately.
At just 300g the newly developed prime is extremely compact while offering a bright f/1.2 maximum aperture for low-light photography and creative control over depth of depth-of-field. The optical formula comprises 9 elements in 7 groups, with aspherical glass that renders sharpness and minimises aberrations. Photographers benefit from a smooth, mechanically precise manual focus operation, and a high-precision rangefinder coupling mechanism.
As with the majority of Voigtlander lenses this model is made entirely from metal for durability with a premium feel. With 12 rounded aperture blades, the Nokton IV is also able to produce smooth and natural looking bokeh, and is a favourite for portraits, street photography, and low-light environmental images.

Optical Design and Performance
The 35mm f/1.2 Nokton IV employs a 9-element, 7-group design with aspherical elements to ensure crisp resolution across the frame, even at wide apertures. The f/1.2 aperture provides both excellent light-gathering ability and refined background separation, with soft fall-off and controlled aberrations.
Build and Handling
True to Voigtländer’s heritage, this Nokton IV is entirely metal-bodied and built for long-term use. Focus action is smooth and consistent, while the VM mount’s precise coupling ensures dependable use with rangefinder cameras. The 52mm filter thread and redesigned hood compatibility offer further practical benefits.
Unified Design Across the Nokton Range
The updated generation of Nokton lenses (35mm, 40mm, and 50mm) shares a 52mm filter thread, a redesigned black filter ring, and support for the reversible LH-14 lens hood. The 40mm and 50mm versions are also compatible with the longer vintage-style LH-15 hood. These updates simplify accessories and create a more cohesive experience across the fast aperture range of lenses.
